The difference between tempered glass and heat resistant glass

Tempered glass is the glass which have compressive stress on the glass surface, it is also called strengthened glass. To improve the strength by chemical methods or physical methods, then the tempered glass surface have compressive stress. The stress on the surface will be offset before the glass bear the outside force, then the bearing capacity is improved greatly, the wind load resistance, thermal resistance, impact resistance are also been strengthened.

The heat resistant glass is the special glass which could bear the thermal shock, have the characteristic of low expansion, thermal shock resistance, corrosion resistance with high strength. It is mainly used as ware, industrial boiler sight glass, window glass in the equipment and so on. So what is the difference between tempered glass and heat resistant glass?

First, the application is different. Toughened glass is widely used in construction, decoration and auto industry, such as the windows and doors, curtain wall, and indoor decoration. The furniture glass and home appliance glass are also common. But the heat resistant glass is mainly used as the daily necessities and medical industry, such as the glass tableware with good heat resistance, the glass breaker in the laboratory and the medical ampoule.

Second, The affect by temperature changing is different. The heat resistant glass is a kind of glass which could resist the thermal with low thermal expansion coefficient, could be used in high temperature, so in the microwave oven and normal ovens, even the temperature changed suddenly, the heat resistant glass can be used safely. But the tempered glass maybe break in the microwave oven with sudden thermal shock. In the production of toughened glass, there is NIS in the glass. With the temperature change, the toughened glass will expand and explode, so couldn’t be used in the microwave oven.

Third, the broken type is different. When broken, the heat resistant will have flaws without shattered glass fragments. The cooling process for the heat resistant glass is slowly, there is no compressed power in the glass to make the glass broken into small fragments. But for tempered glass, the inner prestress which is formed in the production, with the compressed power will make the tempered glass broken into small fragments, and fly apart with explosive sound.
